It’s not a new idea. “Success leaves clues…” is a quote often referenced. Why? It’s amazingly and completely true! Success leaves clues behind. Look at any truly successful person. You can probably find out an awful lot about how they got to where they are. Maybe they have an autobiography, a biography or a biopic about their lives. Maybe it’s a Wikipedia page or a long interview in Rolling Stone. Sometimes you can just straight up ask them. Regardless of the source, if you turn to information about them, it doesn’t take a physics major to figure out how they got from Point A to Point B! Here’s a four-step plan for learning from a success model:
- Choose Wisely
If you know someone who has enjoyed great success along a path similar to the one you’d like to take, think of them as a personal success model. You can learn so much from the mistakes they’ve made and the triumphs they’ve achieved by taking some time to study what worked and what didn’t.
- Decide What You Want to Achieve
What about your success model reminds you of what you want to do? Chances are, the person you chose probably has been successful in a lot of different ways. Don’t take it all on. Stay you. What one thing that they’ve done super well do you also want to do super well? Stick with that.
- Draw a Map
Yup: draw an actual map. Start at the beginning. Where did your model start? How did they get into the field you want to play in? How did they get good at it? How did they score goals? How did they find recognition, customers, investments? Draw it out from Point A to Point B to Point C and so on. Feel free to add silly pictures!
- Action Time
To get anywhere, you’ve gotta take action. It’s great to make a plan but a plan doesn’t do a whole lot of good unless you move on it. Work on your fear, work on your doubts and remember that every successful person had the same fears and doubts you probably have. You can’t win if you don’t swing the bat. Step up to the plate and take a swing. You may not get a home run the first time around but practice really does make perfect.
Key Takeaway for Everyone:
It’s exciting to realize success isn’t some big mystery you’ve got to learn morse code to crack. Once you start following in your success models’ footsteps, you’ll start leaving behind your own organic breadcrumbs of success. Enjoy!
